Genesis
INTRA had its beginnings after the National Illicit Drug Strategy (NIDS) was formed in response to the Federal government’s Drug Summit of 1999. NIDS funded the commencement of INTRA, initially for a three year period, to cover the Far North Coast area of NSW.
The INTRA team grew quickly to a strength of six workers, and has maintained this level of staffing over the past six years. Initially INTRA’s focus was on group interventions. In particular, INTRA’s work in group programs for those with a dual diagnosis (drug abuse and mental illness) led ultimately to the formation of a separate sister service known as MISA (Mental Illness Substance Use), funded by the Attorney General’s department.
Over recent years, while continuing group programs (both short-term and ongoing), more emphasis has been given to individual counselling, health promotion, and community development in the INTRA team commitment.
